Your Brain: Could Prescription Drugs Be Affecting It?

Like low thyroid, prescription medication is an often missed cause of memory problems.

The eight-pound Physicians’ Desk Reference (PDR), which describes all prescription drugs in meticulous detail, is basically a compendium of side effects.

Be aware that virtually every medication prescribed for long-term use lists “memory loss” as a potential side effect. Unexpected culprits include the statin drugs to lower bad cholesterol, all blood pressure medications, Lyrica for fibromyalgia, and even eye drops for glaucoma.

If you’re taking any medications, discuss with your doctor the actual importance of each and every one. Ask if any can be eliminated. Current research is showing that for otherwise healthy women, the statin drugs likely do more harm than good, and they’re definitely linked to memory problems.

Also, remember that it’s not just the medical profession supplying you with chemicals. Too much alcohol, smoking, and other recreational drugs are also linked to declining mental function.
