Your Brain: Yes, It Could Be Your Hormones

During the years of the menopause transition–before and during actual menopause–the hormones estrogen and progesterone begin an inexorable decline.

Estrogen and progesterone are undeniably involved in healthy brain function. Although clinical studies have shown that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does not prevent actual Alzheimer’s disease, most women taking HRT report improvement in clarity of thinking, focus, memory, and concentration.

In addition, menopause may be accompanied by hot flashes and night sweats, the second of which can really interfere with your getting a restful night’s sleep. (I can write about heading off to work after a night of little sleep and drenching sweats, but between the exhaustion and the brain fog, I can’t imagine how awful women who experience them must feel.)

I’m a big fan of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, using plant-derived hormones that are molecularly identical to the human female’s (as opposed to the horse’s urine estrogen in Premarin). If however, you’re not a good candidate for HRT, or you simply don’t want to try it, there are other alternatives.
