Leaky Gut: Diagnosis and Repair

In our last health tip, we discussed the controversial leaky gut syndrome.

If you remember, the triggers are:
• food sensitivities
• NSAIDs like aspirin and ibuprofen
• alcohol
• intestinal parasites and the yeast candida

You can get a blood test to determine if your immune system is creating antibodies to any culprit foods. Or, simply eliminate completely the six troublemakers (dairy, egg, corn, wheat, citrus, soy) for about ten days. If you don’t notice any improvement in your symptoms, food sensitivities are unlikely. However, if you feel better in any way, re-introduce one food group every two days and see which one triggers a return of your symptoms.

If you believe you might have an intestinal parasite, you’ll need to collect small stool specimens in special containers for lab testing. Candida is best diagnosed using a simple blood test that measures the amount of antibodies your immune system is creating against candida.

Once you’ve eliminated your trigger, your intestine will start to heal itself. However, you can take several steps to speed the process. Marla Feingold, our nutritionist at WholeHealth Chicago, has devised what I believe is the most effective nutritional program to heal leaky gut. I’ve observed numerous patients with undiagnosed chronic ill health simply blossom under her program.

She places her patients on a regimen of:
UltraClear Sustain, the intestinal healing agent and detoxifier formulated by Jeffery Bland, Ph.D.
Glutagenics, by Metagenics, a supplement for intestinal health.
• Emergen-C (yes, the same product you see in grocery checkout lines).
• Aloe vera juice (available at most health food stores).

If you need help, Marla Feingold, our nutritionist, is available for appointments by contacting our office. Since she’s a licensed naprapath, she can also order the tests described in this health tip.
