Fibromyalgia and Acupuncture

I roll my eyes ceiling-ward when I come across a “major new finding” in a medical journal that “reveals” something we in alternative medicine have known for years.

In this month’s Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researchers discovered that acupuncture really does work for fibromyalgia. It was a good study: starting with 50 fibro patients, half had acupuncture and the other half didn’t.

Acupuncture users reported significantly less pain, less anxiety, and greater energy than those who had no therapy.

Straight to the point (sorry, I couldn’t resist): if you’re a fibromyalgia patient and you need to locate an acupuncturist, go first to Google and type in the name of your town along with the word “acupuncture.”

To wrangle insurance coverage, get a prescription from your primary care doctor. Ask her to write this:

Diagnosis: fibromyalgia

Treatment: acupuncture for pain control

Number of treatments: ten
