SARA HARRIS
Asian Body Therapist

INTRODUCTIONS, PLEASE!

Sara Harris is a certified practitioner of Asian Body Therapy. She received her training at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Sara is currently studying Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine in pursuit of a Masters of Oriental Medicine. She has been a part of the WholeHealth Chicago staff since 1997.

SHOULD I SEE HER? YES,

I am an Asian Body Therapist who integrates techniques from Thai bodywork, Shiatsu, Tui-na, and Swedish massage to provide effective treatment. My treatment goal is to balance the body's energetic system. Some common clinical conditions that can benefit from Asian Body Therapy include:

-Musculoskeletal problems: back pain, sprains, strains, neck and shoulder problems, repetitive stress injuries

-Headaches, including migraine headaches

-Respiratory problems: asthma, allergies, colds, coughs, weak immune conditions

-Gynecological problems: especially menstrual irregularity or pain

-Digestive problems: reflux, constipation, abdominal bloating

-Stress

-Depression, anxiety

Also, if you are curious about acupuncture but not interested in needles, this is a relaxing way to experience the benefits of meridian therapy.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM THERAPY?

There are three major healing arts in Chinese medicine: Bodywork, Acupuncture, and Herbalism. All three are based on the same principles of ancient Chinese medicine and philosophy. However, it is Bodywork that utilizes the hands and the power of touch in healing, one of the most natural and intuitive forms of healing.

Typical Treatment Session

Bodywork sessions are individualized treatments based on the assessment principles of traditional Chinese medicine, including pulse taking and inspection of the tongue. These diagnostic methods give me insight into your body’s current physical and energetic state. Treatment can be given either fully clothed or unclothed and discretely draped. Treatments are typically given on a massage table although a massage chair is available for those uncomfortable lying down. Depending on the treatment goal and client preference I may use lotion, oils, or liniments. Thai massage sessions are performed fully clothed on a padded floor mat. Please specify when scheduling if you are interested in receiving Thai massage and come prepared with loose fitting clothing.

Therapeutic techniques include:

-Acupressure--A gentle pressing-type therapy along specific energy channels with an emphasis on specific locations for releasing blocks and balancing Qi.

-Cupping--A partial vacuum is created in cups placed on the skin either by means of heat or suction. This draws up the underlying tissues and works to open the meridians.

-Gua Sha--Friction is applied in even, smooth strokes causing “sha” or stagnant blood to surface. The benefits of Gua Sha are numerous and include improved mobility, metabolism, and immunity.

-Moxibustion--A process whereby moxa, dried Artemisia leaves, are burned near acupuncture points to provide penetrating heat and influence the flow of Qi in the meridians.
